In 1846, young Amsterdam Vallon witnesses the brutal murder of his father at the hands of William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting, a powerful and ruthless leader of the Natives gang in New York City's Five Points neighborhood. Ten years later, Amsterdam returns to the city, driven by a burning desire for revenge against Bill the Butcher. As Amsterdam navigates the treacherous world of gangs and politics, he finds himself drawn into a complex web of allegiances and rivalries. He forms an unlikely friendship with Jenny Everdeane, a pickpocket who has earned the respect and admiration of Bill's gang. Meanwhile, Amsterdam becomes embroiled in the campaign for Abraham Lincoln's presidential election, which pits his friend Judge Henry Sherman against the corrupt and ruthless Boss Tweed. As tensions between the Natives and the rival Dead Rabbits gang escalate, Amsterdam sees an opportunity to exact revenge on Bill the Butcher while also advancing his own interests. However, as he becomes increasingly embroiled in the conflict, he begins to question whether seeking vengeance is truly the right path for him. The film's climax features a dramatic and bloody battle between the Natives and the Dead Rabbits, which culminates in a final confrontation between Amsterdam and Bill the Butcher. In the end, Amsterdam must come to terms with his past and decide what truly matters most to him.
